Statements released as thick black smoke billowed over the borough

The sky over the Erewash borough darkened on Thursday after a fire broke out at an Ilkeston recycling yard.

Response teams from Derbyshire Fire & Rescue raced to the scene on Griffon Road in the town during late morning on 6th November.

An initial statement from DFRS said that six fire engines were in attendance supported by an aerial ladder platform and water carrier.  Local residents were asked to keep windows and doors closed as thick black smoke billowed into the sky over the town. Motorists and members of the public were advised to avoid the area around the scene of the incident.

A later statement said that firefighters were expected to remain into the afternoon and early evening but firefighting was latterly scaled back as surrounding roads were reopened although anyone seeing or smelling smoke was asked to continue to keep windows and doors of their property closed.

Site owners Ward Recycling provided more about what had happened.  A statement said: ”We are saddened to confirm that a fire started at our metal recycling and waste management facility on Griffon Road in Ilkeston on the morning of Thursday 6th November 2025. It began in the vehicle depollution area where scrap vehicles are processed and recycled and was quickly contained.

“Everyone on site is safe and well and the situation is under control. We would like to express our utmost gratitude to the Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service who have been exceptional in their response and support, managing the situation as swiftly as possible.

“Donald Ward Ltd, trading as Ward, is committed to the highest standards of quality and safety. The safety of our colleagues and the local community is paramount. A full investigation is underway with the appropriate authorities and we will be cooperating fully to understand the circumstances around the incident.”
