Two borough sites listed as county council invests £4.5m in Derbyshire schools

Two schools in Erewash have been included in a list of schools across Derbyshire which are set to receive a share of £4.5m towards the cost of creating more space and making the learning environment better for students.

A total of 18 schools will receive a cash injection from Derbyshire County Council towards on-going or new projects to modernise or expand following decisions made by Cabinet.

Councillors agreed to allocate £3.1m from the Children’s Services Capital Budget to 10 schools to improve the condition of buildings including roofing, new windows, boilers or re-wiring.

This modernisation work is needed to ensure schools can continue to teach children safely in spaces that enable them to get the best from their learning.

Cabinet also agreed to give funding totalling £1.143m to five schools to create extra classroom space or provide multiple-purpose spaces in areas where there is greatest demand for places.

This money has come from Section 106 agreements – where developers contribute towards the cost of creating infrastructure, such as schools, when building new homes.

Meanwhile, spending of a further £155,000 has been delegated for specific one-off projects at three schools including a new veranda, drainage and electrical work.

Councillor Simon Mabbott, the council’s Cabinet Member for Send and Education, said: “I’m delighted that this funding has been agreed to create extra school places and provide an environment that better supports pupils’ learning.”

Amongst the Children’s Services Capital Budget Modernisation Programme, Longmoor Primary School in Long Eaton has been allocated £245,000 towards plantroom replacement tanking, whilst Wilsthorpe School, just outside the Town Centre, has £80,000 to separate the electricity supply under delegated approval.
