Erewash Walking Month 2026 is being hailed as a huge success by the borough council after record numbers of local people took part.

The authority’s Community Health and Wellbeing Development Officer Rachel Scott, who helped organise May’s programme of 36 free guided walks and events, saluted all those who got behind the initiative.

She said in a message to walk leaders and their clubs: “Huge thanks to you all for your help and support.” Other organisations that backed the drive to get people out and about enjoying the fresh air – ranging from parish councils and leisure centres to GP surgeries and libraries – also came in for praise.

The hikes and other activities tempted around 583 people from across the borough to join in. The total was up 33 on last year – despite nine fewer walks taking place this time round.

Rachel said even more would have participated but were put off by showers on some days and sweltering temperatures on others.

Of those who did take part 80 were entirely new to going for regular walks. Cllr Josy Hare – Erewash’s Lead Member for Health and Wellbeing – stressed how the initiative was careful to cater to walkers of all abilities so no-one was ever left behind.

She said: “Taking regular walks is of immense value to people’s overall physical and mental wellbeing – which is why we urge residents to try to go for a stroll every day, whether by themselves or with a friend or friends. Joining a walking group is a great way to get into the habit.”

The month of activities included a family treasure hunt in Long Eaton’s West Park and climaxed with a spookily-named Coffin Walk, where more than a dozen people followed a circular trail from Draycott.

Part of it traced a route that pallbearers once trudged as they headed from one village to another because their own lacked a churchyard. A sign indicating a stone slab shows where the coffin-bearers laid the casket while taking a breather.
