Working together to help fight domestic abuse

A Derbyshire based female choir has debuted a new vocal arrangement and launched a music video online to raise awareness of domestic abuse.

On Thursday 15th August, Matlock-based DALEDIVA staged an event after being approached by The Mothers’ Union in Derbyshire to work together, to also help support local refuges under the umbrella of the RISE UP! Against Domestic Abuse campaign..

Mothers’ Union has collaborated with DALEDIVA, to arrange and sing, a 3-part vocal arrangement of ‘I am not nothing’ by American Singer / Songwriter Beth Crowley, to use as their anthem for the RISE UP! campaign.

Ally Law, director of DALEDIVA, said, “Domestic abuse can affect anyone at any time, and sadly, many people have experienced it in some form, whether directly or by seeing it happen to someone they care about. This is true of some members of the choir. It can be psychological or physical, and it’s not just something that happens to women.

"This project has really made us think about those in abusive relationships and how they are constantly on alert, constantly looking for a way out. This project is important to us; using the power of music to reach people in ways that other methods sometimes can't.”

DALEDIVA and Mothers’ Union members have also been putting up RISE UP helpline posters and have donated hundreds of toiletry items to local refuge organisation The Elm Foundation.

Helen Mitchell, Head of Operations at The Elm Foundation said: “The very kind and generous donations from the Mothers Union and members of DALEDIVA will make a real difference to our clients. Often women and their children arrive at our refuges with very few personal possessions, and to ensure that a warm welcome is given, with all immediate essentials provided is so important.”
