All Saints and St Mary’s Churches in Sawley are joining in with this year’s ‘Churches Count on Nature’ from 7th to 15th June.

During the week groups including the churches’ Wellbeing Café and the local Beavers group will be surveying the churchyard at All Saints Church on Tamworth Road to see how many species of plants, insects and wildlife they can find. Night time cameras will look out for nocturnal visitors.

Those visiting the churchyard during the week will be able to record any wildlife they see through an app. There will also be opportunities to survey the wildlife at St Mary’s Church.

The week will end with a nature trail and barbecue at 11am – 2pm on Saturday 14th June at All Saints Church, Tamworth Road.  On Sunday 15th June the morning service at All Saints will be held outside to celebrate God’s creation.

The aim of the annual Churches Count on Nature is to record species and share those records as a first step towards being able to protect them.

The collated information allows national agencies to know what precious species are located where in the country. It helps the Church of England to know whether they are fulfilling their aims to care for and increase biodiversity and can be really useful if site managers are making an application for a grant.

Vicar Anne Wilkins said: "We are already registered as a Silver Eco Church within the A Rocha Eco Church scheme and we have taken various steps to encourage wildlife on our land, including putting up bird and bat boxes, creating bug hotels and a hedgehog den and planting native bulbs. Taking part in the Churches Count on Nature will help us understand what is flourishing on our land and think about what more we can do. It’s also an opportunity for local people to join us to enjoy God’s beautiful creation and we hope many people of all ages will take the chance to come along."
