Report: Attendance was lower than expected due to several “dropouts” in the last day, so the payout was adjusted accordingly, to the overall winner, and then three default sections (winner take all), these being the low numbers from both banks (A6 back to B11), then high numbers on each side, B14 to B24, and A11 to A20.  As the Café is closed before Christmas, the draw was held in the Lake Two Car Park.

After a cold start (including a ground frost), the weather became quite reasonable, with a mix of sun and cloud but with a brisk and cold SW wind.  The forecast rain never appeared.

Everyone expected the high numbers to produce the best weights, but we were wrong, as the very high numbers on both banks struggled to get any indications at all.  Instead, the bulk of the fish in the lake seemed to have migrated to the low-numbered pegs, with peg A6, for the second successive week, producing a good weight, and this week, with the same angler in residence, winning the match.

This year, peg A6 now equals peg A20 as the best peg on the lake, with both taking money 19 times.  Peg A15 lies in third place, with B21 in fourth.

Richard (Ginge) Reeve returned to peg A6 again this week, and really “took the match apart” with an incredible winter weight of 182-15.  His successful method from last week, the waggler, failed to produce, but using a bomb and casting two-thirds to three-quarters of the way to the island, he found the carp queuing up for a place within his keepnets.  He baited with corn, sometimes tipped with a maggot, to keep fish interested.

Gaz Kitch drew peg A15, and said he followed the Fin’s advice, starting by casting his bomb (with bread bait) towards the willow tree.  As this failed to show any positive signs, he switched to a maggot feeder and soon caught a few roach, before the carp moved in.  His final 92-10 took second overall and, more importantly, won the High A section.

In the low numbers, the default section became a battle between the two Tonys, Brookes on peg A1 and Lamb on B3.  With both fishing with the bomb and pellet, it was Tony Brookes who took the spoils, ending up with 55-08 to Tony Lamb’s 45-11.  They ended third and fourth overall.

The final section winner (the high B numbers) was John Adamson on peg B14.  John caught two carp in the first 15 minutes on the bomb and bread, then, having switched to his small method feeder, waited until the final hour before having any further signs before catching four more carp and a bream to total 38-12 to take the spoils, as no one else in that section caught a fish.

The remainder did not bother to weigh in and took the opportunity to get away ahead of the traffic.  Many thanks this week to Tony Brookes for the heavy lifting at the weigh-in.

NB. Nisa Opens are held most Wednesdays on Lake Two at Makins Fishery (see Facebook "Nisa - midweek open matches" to book a place).
