Report: Unfortunately, the last Nisa Midweek Open of the year was spoiled by the presence of cormorants on the lake, which appeared to have frightened fish from all the high-numbered pegs on both banks, where anglers spent the day totally bite-less”.
Although the sun shone for much of the day, the temperature did not creep above 4C, and with a keen NE wind all day, it felt extremely cold.
As attendance was down from recent matches, the payout was to the overall winner and then to the (default) winner of each bank, A and B.
We had another masterclass from the Fin, this time showing how to catch carp on the bomb and corn. Andy Findlay was not particularly happy to draw peg B12, especially as he had a cormorant “working” in front of him for most of the day, where he watched it eat about eight bream. Despite this, feeding nothing, Andy cast around his swim with sweet corn on the bomb, and tempted several decent carp. He said that even when he was playing a carp, the cormorant was fishing between him and where he caught fish, and he managed to put 76-12 of carp on the scales for a clear win.
On peg B3, Dave Alewood said that before he caught any fish, he was getting indications on his line, showing there were fish in the vicinity. He persevered with bomb and bread all day, and was rewarded by catching half a dozen carp for a weight of 35-06, which was second overall, which gave him a default win on the B bank (and his third brown envelope from the matches).
Chris Wayte continued his good form, this time on peg A6. Again, the bomb and corn proved successful, and his 33-02 of carp put him in third place overall and won the A bank. This put peg A6 into the lead as the most successful peg on Lake Two this year, producing 19 brown envelopes.
Although two more anglers caught fish, one with a single and one with a double carp, they knew they were not in the prizes, so returned their fish in favour of a quick exit to beat the traffic.
Many thanks again to Andy Findlay for the scale duties.
The next match will be in the New Year, on 7th January, and I will post the list for this after the Christmas break.
Many thanks to everyone who has participated in the Nisa Midweek Opens throughout 2025. I will produce my usual summary of all the matches shortly.
I wish all our competitors and all the Fishery staff an excellent Christmas and a prosperous New Year. See you all in January….
