Report: We had another hard overnight frost.  Lake Five was iced, but remarkably, Lake Two was clear, although the water levels were very high, and even over several pegs.  By the start, the temperature was still at minus two Centigrade, although it rose to around four degrees by the end.

Turnout was down on recent weeks, so the payout was to the overall winner and then (by default) to the winners of each bank (A and B pegs).

Match organiser John Adamson, late to his peg as usual, found it to be under six inches of water, which led to a further delay as he had to manoeuvre his kit onto his platform and not have everything within reach, decide what went on the side tray.  He quickly prepared his bomb rod and was only a few minutes late in casting out bread on the bomb before returning to prepare the rest of his tackle.  Before he could do much more, his rod tip pulled around, and a carp was on its way into his net.  Two more in the next two casts, a lost (foul hooked) fish, then another after thirty minutes gave a good start, before the swim died.  After 90 minutes, he switched to his favoured method feeder. Casting towards the island, he soon started to get indications, and from then to the end of the match, caught decent carp (several doubles), to finish with 115-13 for the win.

Paul Reynolds on A16 found over a foot of water on his peg, and had to position himself on the bank to its left. He set up a bomb rod and pole, and after having no signs on the bomb, switched to the long pole (with a banded pellet) and was amazed to catch several decent carp.  About two hours in, the fish deserted him, and although he added a few more (alternating bomb and pole) struggled to catch for the rest of the match.  He ended with an all carp 60-12 for second place overall and taking the A bank pool.

Third-placed Stu Jones on A19 also found fish, catching from the start on the bomb and bread, cast towards the island.  As the match progressed, his catch rate slowed, and his 58-15 (all decent carp) left him less than two pounds off the money.

John Brandrick (A12) took fourth overall with 39-12, with John Lack (peg B12) taking fifth, and winning the B bank, with 36-12.  Both caught on the bomb and bread, as did Tony Lamb (peg B8) with his two carp for 26-10.

Many thanks to Paul Reynolds (assisted by John Brandrick and Stu Jones) for their scale work, enabling a quick weigh-in.

“Nisa Midweek Opens” are held most Wednesdays on Lake Two at Makins Fishery (see Facebook "Nisa - midweek open matches" to book a place).
