Report: Another excellent attendance. Anglers enjoyed a pleasant and mild day for the time of the year, overcast at first, and then with some sunny periods later in the day, with only one brief rain shower.
The downside was that the Fishery gates were unlocked at 8 am. This formed a queue of vans and cars (plus a delivery lorry) on the public road, causing congestion (which delayed the local bus service). When entry was gained, this did not allow sufficient time for bait to be purchased, then for breakfast to be ordered, prepared and eaten by an 8:30 am draw time (the latest possible during winter months), when anglers set off to their pegs. As a result, most did not bother to eat. With matches starting at 10 am this time of year, access is required from 7:30 am to enable sufficient preparation time, especially for those who enjoy a pre-match breakfast.
As normal, the pool's payout was to the overall winner, then (by default) to the top two weights on each side of the lake (A and B).
After slipping to third place last week, Andy Findlay rectified matters by returning to top spot (which was his seventh win in the previous twelve weeks). Drawing fancied peg A14, and casting his method feeder towards the island, Andy enjoyed a steady day catching carp regularly, for a final weight of 106-12. He didn’t have it all his own way, though, for on the next peg (A16), Lloyd Hayes also fished a superb match for a final weight of 99-10 for second place overall. In contrast to Andy, Lloyd fished with a long pole and hard pellet bait, steadily catching carp, going fish for fish with the winner for most of the day. Lloyd was first in the A bank pool.
The opposite bank produced the next three. Shaun Greenfield on peg B19 caught most of his fish on the long pole and hard pellet bait, ending on 54-15 for third overall and to win the B bank pool, but he was pushed close by Tom Flower (peg B8), whose 52-10 took second on the B bank and fourth place overall. Tom caught carp on the bomb with a yellow wafter bait in the early stages, adding a few more towards the end from his margin on the pole and maggots.
Stuart Jones (B17) caught his 40-01 on the bomb and pellet for fifth place overall, with Paul Reynolds (A6), who failed to catch bream and had to settle for six carp, taking sixth place and second spot on the A bank with 36-09, just ahead of John Adamson’s 34-02 from A10 (2 carp on the method feeder plus a double and several decent bream on pole and pellet). Lee Clark was eighth with 32-11 from B12, and Phil Hunt (A8), whose only bite came on an 8ml pellet fished on his top two, which produced a carp of 13-01.
None of the others bothered to weigh in, preferring a quick getaway to avoid the traffic.
Many thanks to all who assisted with the scales, especially Paul Reynolds and Andy Findlay.
NB. Nisa Opens are held most Wednesdays on Lake Two at Makins Fishery (see Facebook "Nisa - midweek open matches" to book a place).
