Fined HMO owner’s £1.1k bill for ignoring borough council

An Erewash Borough Council investigation into an HMO – house of multiple occupation – has seen its owner taken to court and ordered to pay £1,145 in fines and costs. The authority launched its prosecution of landlord Mahmood Rahemtulla after he ignored a request to supply documentation about tenancy agreements and rent deposits at the five-bed house in Long Eaton. The council also wanted to know about other properties he has an interest in. A housing standards officer gave him […]

SUMMER KIDZ: Boy, 15, is youngest ever to ask town hall question

A proud schoolboy was congratulated by Erewash’s Mayor at a full meeting of the borough council – for becoming the youngest resident ever to submit a public question. Nathan Hayward, 15, wanted to know if the authority had any plans to introduce youth democracy schemes – and what the requirements might be to serve as a young person’s mayor or councillor. Erewash flower displays pruned

Calls to “go out with a bang” and spend all of a Derbyshire council’s money reinstating £190,000 flower displays before it is abolished have been pruned. At an Erewash Borough Council meeting last week (Thursday, July 23rd), Reform UK had urged the Labour authority to reinstate flowerbeds to pre-Covid conditions. The meeting heard that councillors are regularly lobbied about the condition of local parks and verges due to rewilding and wildflower cultivation versus historic award-winning flower arrangements. There are said […]

Plans for large gnome statue on Ilkeston traffic island take a diminutive step forward

Plans to install a large gnome statue on a “culturally significant” ornament-adorned roundabout in a Derbyshire town have taken a step forward. In the midst of a near five-hour Erewash Borough Council meeting filled with debates about free parking, rewilding, a new M1 junction and asylum seeker accommodation, sat a discussion about Ilkeston’s beloved ‘Gnome Island’. The Nottingham Road, Park Drive and Morrisons junction is marked by a roundabout home to a number of gnomes, an impromptu community quirk which […]
