Dozens of flats approved on “eyesore” derelict Erewash site, vacant for more than 15 years

Dozens of flats have been approved on an “eyesore” derelict site which has been vacant for more than 15 years – but none will be “affordable”. At an Erewash Borough Council meeting this month (Wednesday, June 10th), councillors approved plans for a four-storey block of 53 retirement apartments on vacant land next to Lidl and the Erewash Canal in Station Road, Sandiacre. The plans, from McCarthy Stone, had previously been withdrawn by the developer due to flood risk issues, after […]

Plans to turn a derelict former “magnet” for drug deals and squatters into an eight-person bedsit have been rejected by councillors. The two-storey end-of-terrace home in Oxford Street, Long Eaton, sits directly next to the former Galaxy Row Cinema site, which is undergoing regeneration. On Wednesday, June 10th, its councillors unanimously rejected plans to bring a problem property back into use as an eight-person HMO (house in multiple occupation). A “passionate” speech was delivered to the meeting by a representative […]

Borough Council £10k helps get art deco icon restored

A majestic art deco emporium that used to be a mecca for men’s tailoring is standing proud again – thanks to Erewash Borough Council’s war on town centre stores being left in disrepair by uncaring property investors. The former Burton building in Long Eaton – which was built by the gents’ outfitting chain almost 100 years ago – was in such a sorry state it had become an eyesore looming over the town’s High Street. The culprits were Nottingham-based owners […]

Sixth-generation farming family faces the prospect selling cattle over sale of land for new “nature haven”

A sixth-generation Derbyshire farming family faces the prospect of having to sell dozens of cattle amid the fallout over a new “nature haven” in the area. The Grammer family – the last farming family in the area – have farmed 93 acres of agricultural land around Sawley, alongside the River Trent, including their current herd of 280 cattle, for 100 years, through six generations. However, Erewash Borough Council (EBC) recently ended the six-generation tenancy of four acres of land off […]

‘Higgledypiggledy garden mess’

A council has been accused of making a “higgledy-piggledy mess” over land it has told Derbyshire residents to buy, rent or have seized. At an Erewash Borough Council meeting last week (Thursday, April 23rd), councillors discussed the ongoing issue of potentially seizing land used as gardens from 35 homeowners in Doncaster Grove, Long Eaton, after decades of private use. A move from the opposition Conservative group, led by Cllr Wayne Major and supported by other groups, saw a vote urging […]
