Plans to replace 10 Derbyshire councils with 2 new larger ones, to be paused for a “rapid review”

A major Government decision to scrap Derbyshire’s 10 councils and replace them with two new, larger councils from 2028 is to be paused for a “rapid review”. Sources have confirmed to the Local Democracy Reporting Service that the decision to pause follows judicial reviews brought over the four council reshuffles agreed by the Government earlier this year. The 14 decisions made in July, including the reshuffle for Derby and Derbyshire’s 10 councils, will now be paused for a review, the […]

£16m to be set aside by Derbyshire councils for the initial costs of local government reorganisation

Derbyshire councils are to set aside more than £16 million for the initial costs of closing down their own organisations and creating new ones – including laying off many staff. A new report details the expected cost of abolishing Derbyshire’s 10 councils, including the county, city and eight districts and boroughs, and creating two new larger north and south replacements, will be £66 million. In a worst-case scenario – or “stretch case” – this could reach more than £81 million, […]

MP describes NHS clinic “appointment only” restrictions as “disappointing and sad”

Increased demand has led to four Derbyshire NHS clinics being restricted to “appointment only” for several hours a day, in a move dubbed “disappointing and sad” by an MP. Opening hours at four urgent treatment centres in Buxton, Ilkeston, Matlock and Ripley are to remain the same at 8am to 8pm but walk-ins will now be restricted for the tail end of each day, with appointments required. At Buxton’s urgent treatment centre, at Buxton Hospital, appointments will be required from […]

Support for new Erewash M1 junction

Long-heralded plans for a new M1 junction in Derbyshire have the backing of the Prime Minister. Erewash MP, Labour’s Adam Thompson, said the case for a new M1 junction at Sandiacre – dubbed Junction 25a – is now “very good” and has the tacit support of Andy Burnham as well as Government officials. The positive update comes a month after Erewash Borough Council agreed, with cross-party support, to launch an £80,000 economic appraisal into a potential new M1 junction at […]

Local people net £5.4m thanks to Citizens Advice

A frail pensioner who was left shivering at the age of 77 has paid tribute to Erewash’s Citizens Advice team for helping local people like her reap an eye-watering £5.4m in grants and benefits they were missing out on – just in the past year. The severely disabled resident, called Anne, was close to exhausting her savings and afraid to turn on her heating when she turned to the council-backed charity. Its experts were stunned to find she was not […]

A record sum of almost £2million is to be spent by Erewash council on creating new playgrounds to get children more active. The borough’s leader Cllr James Dawson said the authority’s biggest ever investment in play areas will see the construction of 12 exciting fun zones where tired existing playgrounds have been identified as needing entirely new equipment. A 13th – in Sawley – will get its safety surfacing replaced along with new fencing. Cllr Dawson declared: “Happy and healthy […]

Erewash mill flats plan set for rejection

The planned conversion of an historic Derbyshire mill is set for rejection due to the negative impact on a neighbouring business and flats being deemed too small. Bridge Mills, which faces the Erewash Canal off Derby Road and Bridge Street in Long Eaton, is the subject of plans to convert the former facility into 80 flats. Erewash Borough Council is due to decide on the plans at a meeting on Wednesday, August 12th, with planning officials recommending refusal. They write […]
