Erewash Borough Council is looking to announce NO rise in council tax this year – while at the same time the town hall ploughs millions of pounds more into boosting the borough.
The authority has launched an online survey so residents can give their views on its proposed budget, which also includes freezing car park charges. Household subscriptions to get garden waste collected would also be pegged.
Erewash Borough Council leader Cllr James Dawson urged residents to take part in the consultation – which comes after the council won a battle for its central Government funding to be increased.
He said: “This year the council will receive about £15.8million in core funding plus £1.5million from other sources – which is a lot more than expected.
“We have long advocated for a fairer funding model, maintaining that the borough was disadvantaged under the previous system. Erewash has now secured the most favourable settlement of any Derbyshire district – and is the only council in the region to achieve an increase in core spending power.”
Prior to the new funding formula the council had feared a budget gap in 2026/27 – but this is now not the case. The council tax freeze will be the first in more than a decade.
Cllr Dawson declared: “This puts money back in the pockets of residents.”
He stressed that a balanced budget was still being proposed – as the authority reaps the benefits of its financial prudence over the past few years.
Cllr Dawson said: “The great position we find ourselves in means we can put around £4.5million into our new Erewash Investment Fund to deliver projects that benefit residents, businesses and the wider community.
“Residents will have a view about how we might invest. Some may want more free car parking. Others may want more parks improved or for us to do more to support the town centres. We are interested to hear what residents have to say.”
The budget consultation – which takes only a few minutes to complete – is open until Sunday 10th February and can be found here: Budget Consultation 2026-27 | Let’s Talk Erewash
It also includes questions about priorities for Cotmanhay – where the Government has promised to invest up to £20million over the next ten years.
Erewash Borough Council provides services to almost 113,000 residents, who live in over 50,000 households.
