Sad state of boarded up A38 homes in Derby

The state of once “big and beautiful” houses now completely boarded up on a street next to the A38 have been described as “disgusting”.

All the homes on Queensway have been barricaded for some time after they were brought by National Highways, as part of a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO).

The houses have been destined for demolition for some time but this appeared to be confirmed when the Government committed to funding a major, but controversial, improvement scheme for the A38.

An estimated £600m upgrade would potentially see the roads widened with more lanes both side and the creation of flyovers.

However, the National Highways-led project has descended into doubt in recent weeks.

The Government has proposed for the upgrade scheme to be cancelled to allow more money to be spent on the UK’s defence.

The latest development means fresh questions are being asked over the future of the houses close to the Markeaton Island – and whether they can be saved.

The once “beautiful” detached homes currently lie in a sorry state.

Windows and doors have been boarded up with driveways blocked by temporary wire fencing displaying signs of “keep out”.

One of the signs in front of one property says “Do not trespass, danger to life”. Some of the fencing appears to have been damaged too.

Some of the side doors are damaged and garages discoloured.

A fenced-off green area lays significantly overgrown – representing a wild jungle-like scene. A kid’s go-kart can be seen deep-rooted into the high weeds at the front of the fencing.

Large trees on verges outside the houses have grown so much that the branches have almost extended within the properties’ driveways.

The Stop the A38 Expansion Group believes the homes could be saved should the project be scrapped.

Clare Wood from the campaign group said: “We’ve always opposed the CPO of people’s homes and we have total sympathy for those who were bought out and had no choice but to move against their wishes.

“Many of the homes also had established gardens which will be completely overgrown now. If the new road scheme is cancelled, those houses could be lived in again.”

Paul Rowlands, who lives nearby on Plimsoll Street, said: “One of the sad things about all of this was the people who had to give up their homes.

“I hope if the A38 doesn’t happen some sensitive thought is put into what happens with those houses.”

Passers-by were also sad to see the big homes standing completely boarded up.

One person said: “These homes are such a waste. It’s disgusting what’s happened.

“I bet these homes are still beautiful inside – better than new builds I’d say. What will happen if the A38 project doesn’t happen?”

National Highways was asked what its future plans were for the homes, should the A38 project be scrapped.

A spokesperson said: “The possible cancellation of the A38 is currently under consultation.

“No final decision has yet been made and an update will be shared in due course.”
