Derby College Group is set to host a flagship Women in Engineering event on Wednesday 11th February, coinciding with International Women in STEM Day, bringing together global engineering leaders, inspiring speakers and young people to explore the future of engineering.

The event will take place at the East Midlands Institute of Technology (EMIoT) at The Roundhouse, Pride Park, Derby, a specialist hub designed to deliver high-level technical education and training aligned directly with the needs of modern industry. The EMIoT works closely with employers to ensure learners develop the advanced skills required in sectors such as engineering, manufacturing, rail, digital and clean technologies, helping to close regional skills gaps and support economic growth across the East Midlands.

Taking place in the institute’s state-of-the-art facilities, the evening will explore why women are vital to the future of engineering, the wide range of careers available, and the many different routes into the industry, from apprenticeships and college courses to long-term professional pathways.

Attendees will hear real-world stories from people working in engineering today, ask questions, and take part in hands-on activities while learning more about the courses and opportunities available at Derby College Group.

Leading global and national engineering organisations including Siemens Mobility, TÜV Rheinland, Network Rail, Porterbrook and Amey will be attending, alongside SheCanEngineer and Women in Rail, offering insight, guidance and encouragement to young people considering a career in engineering.

Johanna Sendallar, Teacher of Engineering at Derby College Group and coordinator of the event, said: “This event is about showing young people what engineering really looks like today, creative, ollaborative, high-tech and full of opportunity. We want everyone who attends to leave knowing there is a place for them in this industry, whatever their background or starting point.”

The event is open to everyone, whether already interested in engineering, curious about STEM, or simply exploring future options.

Because women are under-represented in engineering, with recent sector data showing women make up less than 17% of the engineering and technology workforce, the event forms part of Derby College Group’s positive action commitment under the Equality Act 2010. It is designed primarily to support women by providing role models, confidence and networking opportunities, while remaining open to all.
