Seven people have been injured after a car was driven into pedestrians in a Derby City street.
The vehicle, a black Suzuki Swift, struck a number of people in Friar Gate at about 9.30pm on Saturday 28th March. It is thought that the suspect drove off along Friar Gate away from the city centre, towards Ashbourne Road, then onto Bridge Street, Lodge Lane towards Five Lamps, Garden Street and Duffield Road before going onto St Alkmund’s Way.
The visibly damaged vehicle was then safely stopped by police a short time later at Station Approach, on the way over to Pride Park.
The injured were treated at the scene by ambulance crews before being taken to Royal Derby Hospital and Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham, having suffered a range of serious but not life-threatening injuries.
Derbyshire Police have moved to clarify, contrary to online speculation, that no one died in the incident.
A 36-year old man who lives in Derby but is originally from India, was subsequently arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, causing serious injury through dangerous driving, inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, and dangerous driving, and was detained in police custody.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing and officers are keeping an open mind as to the motives. Forensic teams were sweeping the scene over the course of Sunday morning which was littered with a range of personal belongings of those caught up in the incident.
A Police cordon at the scene prevented car owners who had vehicles in the area from collecting them although this was lifted at around 3:00pm on the day after the incident.
Although some witnesses have already made contact, Police officers continue to appeal for information, particularly from revellers in the area at the time.
You can provide all and any information, including CCTV or dash-cam footage, via non-emergency contact routes, including by calling 101, using Police social media or the Derbyshire Constabulary website (Contact Us link), or by contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or online.
In a prepared statement given to the assembled media, Chief Superintendent Aldred expressed her well-wishes to the victims and their families, and her gratitude to the people of Derby for their patience and support whilst the investigation continues.
