Long Eaton Safer Neighbourhood Police officers have taken action following a recent increase in incidents of shoplifting in a local supermarket.

Thefts occurred from the Co-op on College Street.

Officers have been working with the store in an effort to resolve the issue.

Investigations found that the thefts were largely being committed by students in uniform on their way home from school, who were blatantly taking items and putting the into a blazer or bag, before walking out without making payment.

Patrols have since been increased in a bid of identify offenders and CCTV has been trawled.

Offenders who have been identified will be given community disposals for first offences, whilst school assemblies will see messages put across in a local school in a bid to reinforce the consequences of shoplifting

Supermarket staff have implemented a ‘three in, three out’ policy in order to reduce the amount of youths in the store at a time

Since police involvement, there have been no further incidents reported but a statement from the Long Eaton SNT encouraged parents to discuss the consequences of shoplifting with their children.
