The last stop of almost every night out is a takeaway. New research by 23 Paul Street has ranked all 310 local authority areas in England and Wales, including 35 in the East Midlands, by the average Food Standards Agency hygiene rating of their takeaways, to find where the end of the night is in safest hands and where it is not.

Takeaways in the East Midlands average 4.46 out of 5 across the region’s 35 council areas, against 4.40 for England and Wales as a whole.

The highest average takeaway hygiene rating in the region for a late-night takeway is Bassetlaw with a score of 4.96 out of 5. The worst is Ashfield at 3.92.

Nationally, Bassetlaw has the highest average of any area in England and Wales at 4.96, and Wigan the lowest at 3.62. Four of the five lowest-rated areas in the country are London boroughs: Newham, Hillingdon, Ealing and Waltham Forest.

The study also looked at the hygiene ratings of pubs, bars and nightclubs. In the East Midlands, Gedling has the highest average pub rating at 4.94 and Derbyshire Dales the lowest at 4.11.

Amongst the East Midlands rankings, Erewash sits 16th with a score of 4.51 for the average hygiene rating out of 5, and 4.81 for the average pub, bar and nightclub rating, again out of 5.

Nottingham sits 10th, Amber Valley is listed in 26th, with Derby in 33rd of 35 positions in the rankings.

London nightlife venue 23 Paul Street wanted to find out where in Britain the end of a night out is in the safest hands.

To find out, the study took the Food Standards Agency’s Food Hygiene Rating Scheme ratings for takeaways, and separately for pubs, bars and nightclubs, in each of the 310 local authority areas in England and Wales, and calculated the average rating for each area.

Food hygiene ratings run from 0 (urgent improvement necessary) to 5 (very good) and are awarded by local authority food safety officers following inspection. A higher average means a greater share of an area’s takeaways were rated highly at their most recent inspection.

Data was collected in October 2026 and is correct as of this date. The study reflects the ratings awarded to premises at inspection, rather than the quality of the food or of any individual business.

Ratings for individual premises are available at ratings.food.gov.uk.
