A man in his 70s has died after a serious collision occurred in West Hallam.
Emergency response teams were called to High Lane West on Wednesday 4th November, after reports were received regarding an accident between the St. Wilfrids and Station Road junctions.
Drivers were asked to avoid the scene and use alternative routes, but traffic did build up as a result of the closure, after a Ford car and a Mercedes van collided.
A statement from Derbyshire Police said that, around 1:15pm, the Ford being driven by a 79-year old Ilkeston man crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a van being driven by a man in his 50s.
The driver of the van is reported to have stopped at the scene and was helping Police officers with their inquiries. Reports suggest that the County Air Ambulance was called to the scene to assist with the operation.
No arrests were made, but the 79 year driver of the Ford died at the scene. His family have been informed and are receiving relevant support. The victim has not been publicly named.
The road was closed for a few hours but reopened later in the day.
The website ‘Crash Report’ details that there have been an average of 33.3 collisions a year in West Hallam over 27 years of monitoring (1999-2025), involving 48.3 casualties and 64.6 vehicles a year, with 14 fatalities.
