Residents in an Erewash area that is to be transformed as it gets a £20million Pride in Place boost are being invited to a free summer fun day – themed around helping them to enjoy a healthier and happier future.

The extravaganza – which includes activities for all the family ranging from puppets and games to meditation sessions – is being backed by local doctors thanks to GP surgeries in and around Cotmanhay banding together to stage it.

It is being billed as a “health and wellbeing festival” and will feature free refreshments plus giveaways that are described as “treats and goodies”.

The Government has pledged to pour £2million a year over the next decade into Cotmanhay as part of a £5.8billion mission to regenerate places around the country that it has identified as disadvantaged – and where inhabitants feel they have been left behind.

The borough council has already helped set up a new Cotmanhay Neighbourhood Board so people from the community can work with Erewash’s MP Adam Thompson to determine where the colossal investment will go.

The fun day on Wednesday 29th July runs from 10am to 2pm and is being hosted by the Cotmanhay Community Network at its hub on Bennerley Avenue, which is a popular venue for Tiny Tots sessions and Zumba classes.

A poster touts it as “a free, friendly community event with interactive activities, advice and local support to help you look after your physical and mental wellbeing.”

People of all ages are welcome – and can just turn up with no need to book.

Sara Bains, who is wellness, resilience and inequalities lead for Erewash Primary Care Network and Erewash Health Partnership, said: “We hope to attract families and residents for what is a fun festival with a wellbeing focus.”

Erewash Borough Council leader Cllr James Dawson said: “The Pride in Place investment that is heading Cotmanhay’s way is terrific news for an area where we are keen to encourage residents to lead healthier lifestyles.

“The festival is an ideal opportunity for them to find out how they can do this – so they can make the most of what is going to be a brighter future for the entire neighbourhood. The dedicated and hardworking health professionals and local GP surgeries who have organised the event are promising a fun experience – and we grateful to them.”
