Derby College Group Freshers’ Week 2025: a warm welcome to thousands of new students

Derby College Group (DCG) has launched the new academic year in style with a vibrant and successful Freshers’ Week across its sites including Broomfield Hall in Morley plus the Roundhouse and Joseph Wright e campuses in Derby.

Organised by Micah Jebbison, DCG’s new Union Development Manager, the events brought together students, local employers, charities, and college services in a lively celebration of community, opportunity, and belonging.

Micah said: “Freshers’ Week is about so much more than a welcome fair; it’s about helping students feel that sense of belonging right from the start. We want them to feel supported, inspired, and ready to get the very best from their college experience. The response this year has been incredible, with students not only engaging with what’s on offer but also showing their kindness and generosity to the charities involved.”

Students also threw themselves into the interactive stands and challenges.

Rudolf Balog, studying Business Finance, said: “It was an amazing day with such a great atmosphere. Taking part in the reps challenge at the MPWR stand was a brilliant way to meet new people and I’ve already made connections that will help me throughout my time here.”

Dannii Fulford, CEO of MPWR,  a mental health and wellbeing support organisation, commented: “Freshers’ Week is a fantastic opportunity to open up conversations around positive mental health. The students have been so engaged, curious, and supportive, it’s inspiring to see young people so committed to looking after themselves and each other.”

First-year student Maja Kussy said: “I was so excited to start my course, and this event has made me feel even more confident. I’ve learned so much more about what’s available and I’m looking forward to joining in with different groups and activities.”

Seraya Cliff, Head of Student Development, Student Experience and Pastoral Support, who helped coordinate the Roundhouse event, said, "It is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our students’ talents and celebrate their hard work and creativity. It was wonderful to see so many people come together to support them, and I’m proud of the dedication and teamwork that went into making the day such a success."

Sgt. Callum Repton, representing the Army, added: “Freshers’ is a great chance to show students the wide range of careers and opportunities on offer, from gaining qualifications to developing leadership skills. The Army has something for everyone, and it was fantastic to see so many interested young people.”

Jacob Blackshields (17) from Belper also came back to join the celebrations, one year into his Public Services course. He said: "Last year’s Freshers really helped me settle into college life and I wanted to come back and see it again from the other side. It’s brilliant to see so many new students getting involved – it sets you up for success.”

The Samaritans praised the warmth of the new intake, noting they had “never been looked after so much” at an event. They were “blown away” by students who spontaneously donated money to support the charity.
