Officials representing the REEL Cinemas chain have announced that the historic Ilkeston Scala site is to change hands.

In an e-mail to subscribers from the company head office in Loughborough, Leicestershire, a statement said that the cinema on the corner of The Market Place at Pimlico is the UK’s second oldest working cinema, and had been part of the town's story since 1913 - and part of the company portfolio for many years.

However, it added that, from 5th September, the building would begin a new chapter under the ownership of Premiere Property, who, it said was "...committed to honouring its heritage and keeping it a place the community treasures."

The company statement moved to address the concerns of local people adding that there would be no disruption and that current staff would continue to help run the cinema day to day.

Finally, there was a heartfelt note of thanks offered from the outgoing company to supporting members of the public during the period in which REEL Cinemas had run the site, adding that it been "a privilege".

There was also a pledge to continue cheering the Scala on as it enters its next chapter, adding that it was "excited to see it continue to thrive for many years to come."
