New funding to help schools welcome and support people with disabilities

A major investment of £1m from Derbyshire County Council is set to help schools across the county create more inclusive learning environments for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

The funding proposal being discussed by Cabinet on Thursday 10 September would support essential adaptations to mainstream schools to ensure they meet the needs of current and new pupils who need additional support to thrive.

If agreed, the cash would be used to make improvements so schools continue to provide high-quality inclusive education for children with a wide range of learning, communication, sensory, emotional and behavioural needs.

It would reflect the county council’s commitment to ensure children can access the support they need within their local communities, enabling more pupils to learn alongside their peers in welcoming and accessible environments.

Improvements could include enhanced teaching spaces, sensory-friendly areas, accessibility adaptations and specialist support facilities.

These changes would help children take part in school life, access the curriculum with greater confidence and independence and benefit from improved wellbeing, attendance and engagement.

By supporting schools to adapt and respond to changing needs, the funding would ensure that schools remain fit for the future and ready to welcome a growing number of pupils with SEND.

Councillor Simon Mabbott, the county council’s Cabinet Member for SEND and Education, said: “Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow and achieve their potential in an environment where they feel supported and included.

“This investment would help schools make important improvements that benefit children with a wide range of additional needs, ensuring they can access education close to home and alongside their friends.

“We are committed to working with schools to create learning environments where everyone feels included and all children and young people can thrive.”

Cabinet will be asked to allocate £500,000 from the School Condition Allocation for adaptations supporting pupils receiving SEN Support.

A further £500,000 would come from the High Needs Provision Capital Allocation to support adaptations for pupils with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
