Having recently asked borough residents for help with naming six brand-new food waste vehicles after the rollout of new food waste collections started in March, Erewash Borough Council officials have announced the results.
One vehicle has been proudly named Ernie, after a local boy with autism who adores bin lorries.
Four more vehicles were named by pupils through a local schools’ competition. ‘Peels on Wheels’ and ‘Waste O-Saurus’ were creatively thought up by Emilia (age 6) and Sophia (age 7) from Field House Infant and Nursery School.

Ava from Oak Class (Year 3) and Heidi from Chestnut Class (Year 4) from Hallam Fields Junior School also came up with witty names – ‘Monster Munch-It’ and ‘Binnie the Pooh’.
The students were elated when a new vehicle they helped to name came to visit, seen in the photos above.
When it came to the public consultation, we saw an array of brilliant ideas like ‘The Walking Bread’, ‘Brussel Hussel’ and ‘Foody McFoodface’. But only one name could be chosen, and the name you decided on is… Trash Bandicoot, inspired by the iconic 1990s video game!

Councillor Mark Alfrey, Lead Member for Environment said: “Thank you to all the residents that got involved in a fun part of this next chapter for Erewash. I look forward to seeing Trash Bandicoot, Peels on Wheels, Monster Munch-It, Waste O-Saurus, Binnie the Pooh and Ernie collecting food waste around the borough.
“We know residents care deeply about doing their bit for the environment, and we were shown this again after a successful start to the new scheme saw 528 tonnes of food waste collected in the first two months. It’s really been a simple change that will make a big difference for our environment and help us waste less.”
Food waste collections launched across Erewash in late March. The new service forms part of the Government’s Simpler Recycling legislation, helping to stop food waste ending up in black bins.
Instead, food waste from Erewash is being transformed into biogas (a form of green energy) and fertiliser for local farms at an anaerobic digestion facility in Derby.
