Students at Derby College Group’s Roundhouse campus gained valuable insight into the realities of the modern business world when a panel of regional experts visited the college for a special “Insight into Business” event.

Recently, the event welcomed representatives from East Midlands Chamber and a range of external employers who shared their experience and knowledge with Business students. The session provided a practical look at how businesses develop from an initial idea through to marketing, branding and ultimately sales.

During the event, students explored key aspects of running and growing a business, including identifying target customers, understanding how different business functions work together, and how innovation and new technologies such as AI are shaping the future of industry.

Guest speakers represented a wide range of organisations and sectors, bringing different perspectives and experiences to the discussion.

Lisa Baggott, Business Advisor for The East Midlands Chamber, highlighted the importance of connecting students with local businesses. She said: “It was fantastic to see such enthusiasm and curiosity from the students. Events like this are incredibly important because they help bridge the gap between education and the real business world. By hearing directly from people working in different sectors, students gain a clearer understanding of the opportunities available to them and the skills they will need to succeed.”

Throughout the session, speakers shared practical insights into entrepreneurship, innovation, marketing and sales, helping students understand how an idea evolves into a successful enterprise.

Ian Pownall, Head of Connections at Juggling Octopus, delivered a session focused on the importance of sales and building relationships in business. He said: “Sales is often misunderstood, but at its heart it is about solving problems and building genuine relationships. I wanted students to see that business success is not just about having a great idea, it is about understanding people, communicating value and having the confidence to take that idea to market.”

Students also welcomed the opportunity to hear directly from professionals working across the business landscape.

Harvey, a Level 3 Business Studies student at Derby College Group, said: “It was really insightful hearing from people who are actually working in business. It helped me understand what the real world of business looks like and how different areas like marketing, innovation and sales all connect together. It has definitely given me a better idea of the kinds of careers and opportunities that are out there.”

The event formed part of Derby College Group’s ongoing commitment to working closely with employers and industry partners to give students real world insights and career inspiration.

Lorna Edwards, Curriculum Manager at Derby College Group, said the session was a valuable opportunity for students to see how classroom learning connects to real careers. Lorna said: “Opportunities like this allow our students to hear directly from industry professionals and understand how the skills they are developing through their studies translate into the real business world. It helps bring their learning to life and inspires them to think about the wide range of career paths available.”
