Derby has been ranked in the top 10 of results following a new study which analysed the busiest and therefore the loudest UK university areas for nightlife, based on how many venues are open until late at night per 1,000 students.

The research by Bed Kingdom counted pubs, bars, nightclubs, takeaways and fast food spots within three miles of each university campus then measured that total against the number of full-time students living in the area.

Areas only qualified if they had at least 10,000 full-time students listed via the Higher Education Statistics Agency with 56 UK university places qualifying in total.

Derby came in 4th with 12,0800 full time students, with 29.4 late night venues, 12.8 pubs, bars and nightclubs, 16.6 takeaways and fast food shops per 1,000 students, and with 355 venues in total.

The list was topped by Hull, followed by Bolton and Huddersfield, with Derby just missing out on the top 3.

Commenting on the findings, spokesperson Ashley Hainsworth said: “Taking into account the number of students in these areas, while there are plenty of venues for them to explore, there is also a higher chance of lots of noise late at night. With bars, nightclubs and takeaways typically open until the early hours of the morning, this may cause students who don’t choose to go out late to have a poor night’s sleep.

“For example, Hull, which tops the list is a relatively small and tight area so nightlife in that part of the UK has a strong chance of getting loud late at night, especially with 41.1 venues per 1,000 students.

“Many students will be preparing for 9am lectures in the coming weeks and a large proportion of those will be new to the area, so it’s worth noting the amount of venues in the vicinity of campus to get familiar with surroundings and to know what to expect.

“Things like earplugs and blackout curtains could help students who are living in busy areas to have a better sleep and mattress quality is also important when attempting to get an undisturbed sleep.

“One interesting finding from these results is that only two southern places in Bournemouth and Portsmouth make the top 10. The data suggests a possible north-south divide in student nightlife, with only two southern areas making the cut.”
