New measures to improve public safety in a “vulnerable” part of Derby where a man was fatally stabbed could be introduced by officials.

Derby City Council says it is in “early stages” of putting additional street lighting around the Cheapside area of Derby – in the vicinity of St Werbugh’s churchyard.

The “priority location” is one of Derby’s busiest night-time hotspots attracting huge footfall during night time, especially at weekends.

However, the area has been at the centre of a number of incidents including the stabbing of Josh Carter five years ago.

The 22-year-old was fatally stabbed in the area and there have been numerous other reports of violence in recent years too – including a woman being assaulted almost two years ago.

A very serious incident in nearby Friar Gate earlier this year saw a car hit several pedestrians too.

Efforts to improve the visibility around the hotspot are part of the council’s ongoing commitment to improve public safety in the city centre and across Derby.

There is also a strong council commitment to tackle violence against women and girls.

The Labour-led authority has invested in recruiting more Public Protection Officers (PPOs) and improving CCTV monitoring around the city centre.

News of more lighting came to light when Derby City Council leader Nadine Peatfield appeared on BBC Radio Derby.

The Labour leader called the area around St Werburgh’s Church a “vulnerable space” which “feels a bit too dark”.

The council has confirmed plans are in place but did not answer how many lights are proposed and how much they would cost.

Councillor Sarah Chambers, cabinet member for public safety, said: “We are currently in the early stages of plans for additional lighting to the St Werburgh’s churchyard area to enhance it and improve visibility.

“The area is a frequently used part of the city centre and is within one of the priority locations identified in the Public Realm Strategy.

“The enhancements to this area have also been identified as part of the ongoing work to maintain and build upon Derby’s prestigious Purple Flag status.

“Derby’s Purple Flag status is a recognition of the city’s commitment to creating a dynamic, safe, secure, and vibrant night-time economy.

“We are committed to ensuring that everyone feels safe when travelling in and around the city.”

The news comes after a series of knife crime incidents across the city.

Incidents have taken place in the Mackworth, Stockbrook, and Chaddesden areas within days and have seen a number of people arrested.

Derbyshire police say its officers have found nothing to link the incidents to one another and there is “no information to suggest any wider risk to the public”.

In response to events, Cllr Peatfield said in a statement: “We are continuing to work closely with partners including Derbyshire Constabulary, local businesses, and residents to ensure that residents feel listened to and safe.

“We will continue to review our approaches and liaise with our partners and residents to ensure the city remains safe for everyone.”
