Seven injured after car is driven into pedestrians in City Centre street

Seven people have been injured after a car was driven into pedestrians in a Derby City street.

The vehicle, a black Suzuki Swift, struck a number of people in Friar Gate at about 9.30pm on Saturday 28th March.

The injured were treated at the scene by ambulance crews before being taken to Royal Derby Hospital and Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham, having suffered a range of serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Derbyshire Police have moved to clarify, contrary to online speculation, that no one died in the incident.

A man in his 30s, originally from India, was found a short time after the incident and subsequently arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, causing serious injury through dangerous driving, inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, and dangerous driving, and was detained in police custody.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing and officers are keeping an open mind as to the motives.  Forensic teams were sweeping the scene over the course of Sunday morning which was littered with a range of personal belongings of those caught up in the incident.

A Police cordon at the scene prevented car owners who had vehicles in the area from collecting them although this was lifted at around 3:00pm on the day after the incident.
