Councillor Greg Maskalick has been announced as the new Mayor of Erewash after spending the past year as Deputy to Councillor Harry Atkinson.

The chains were handed over at the council’s annual meeting at Long Eaton Town Hall on Thursday 21 May.

Councillor Maskalick said: “It is an honour to be elected as Mayor of Erewash. I intend to make the most of this year and take the opportunity to talk to residents and engage closely with our communities. I want life to be vibrant for the people who live in this borough which I am proud to call home.”

The new Mayor, who is originally from Pittsburgh in the USA, is incredibly proud to have become a UK citizen in 2015. He quickly assimilated into British culture and became a licensed Cricket umpire where he enjoyed officiating many lower league games in Erewash until a knee injury put an end to this.

Before moving to the UK, he worked as a high school teacher and professional pianist, which saw him work with Bruce Willis. Today the Mayor teaches at Saint Benedict Catholic Voluntary Academy and gigs with his Roadkill Blues Band around Erewash and further afield. He also plays the organ and piano for church services at Ockbrook Moravian Church, Saint Steven’s Church in Borrowash and occasionally at All Saints Church in Ockbrook.

Councillor Greg Maskalick was elected councillor for Ockbrook and Borrowash in 2023. His official charities as Mayor will be the homeless charity the Canaan Trust in Long Eaton and Home Start in Ilkeston. Reverend Tim Sumpter and Father Andrew Cole will be the Mayor’s Chaplains.

The new Deputy Mayor will be Councillor Linda Burns who was elected as Councillor for Cotmanhay in 2023. She has lived in Cotmanhay for over 40 years and is on the board for the Cotmanhay Pride in Place investment from the Government. She is also on the Trustees of the Cantelupe Centre, Cotmanhay Community Network and supports Action 4 Cotmanhay.

The Deputy Mayor, who has a disability, advocates for disabled people, as well as supporting Blue Tonic and Undercurrents, Ilkeston Football Club, Ilkeston Community Boxing, Erewash Museum and the 2nd Ilkeston Scouts group among others.

To closely engage with Erewash residents, Councillor Greg Maskalick will be holding ‘Meet the Mayor’ sessions.
