Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Authority has today announced Damien West as the Service’s next Deputy Chief Fire Officer.

The decision follows a comprehensive selection process assessing leadership, operational experience, and strategic capability.

Councillor Mark Cliff, Chair of the Fire and Rescue Authority and Chair of the Brigade Managers Appointments Panel, said: “Damien’s appointment as Derbyshire’s next Deputy Chief Fire Officer reflects both his extensive experience and his clear commitment to public service.

“His career journey, from an On Call firefighter through to senior leadership roles, demonstrates the depth of knowledge and dedication to public safety he brings. Just as importantly, he has the strategic perspective needed to support the Service through future challenges and opportunities.

“I am confident he will make a significant contribution to Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service and the communities we serve.”

Mr. West’s appointment was formalised today at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Fire and Rescue Authority on recommendation of the Brigade Managers Appointments Panel.

Speaking upon his appointment, Mr. West said: “After 12 fantastic years at Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, I’m incredibly proud to be returning to the Service where I started my wholetime firefighting career.

“Derbyshire has always had a place in my heart and, in such a beautiful county, I feel privileged to be taking up this role and cannot wait to get started. I believe the experiences I’ve gained in my time away from Derbyshire have equipped me with the skills and knowledge to help lead this fantastic organisation.

“I would like to thank everyone who was involved in the rigorous selection process and especially thank the Members of the fire authority who have put their trust in me to work alongside the fantastic people in this organisation.”

Mr. West is expected to take up his position as Deputy Chief Fire Officer later this year.

The Fire and Rescue Authority and Service has collectively expressed its sincere thanks to Clive Stanbrook for the leadership, commitment and reassurance he has provided while serving as Acting Deputy Chief Fire Officer.

A statement said: “His contribution has been invaluable during this time. Clive will continue in the role until Mr. West has completed his notice period with Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, ensuring continuity and stability for the Service.”

Damien West’s career
Damien started his career in the fire service as an On-Call firefighter with Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue in 2006. He later joined Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service as a wholetime firefighter in 2009, and Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service as a Station Manager in 2014.

Damien progressed through several roles before being appointment as Assistant Chief Fire Officer in Nottinghamshire on 16th April 2023.
