More victims of stalking and domestic abuse in Derbyshire are to be offered SmartWater marking kits to help keep them safe.

Derbyshire Police began using the forensic marking technology in October 2023 as part of a trial aimed at protecting high risk victims in two areas of the county.

The pilot was then extended across the county for high-risk victims in November 2023 and is now being extended further so it will be available for victims in all risk levels in the county from 2nd November.

Victims who are deemed suitable will be given a home protection kit and a canister of SmartWater which they can then spray on the perpetrator if they approach them.

The liquid is not visible to the naked eye but glows under ultraviolet light and each kit has a unique code so it can be traced back to specific victims and perpetrators.

SmartWater will stay on clothing and skin for several weeks, allowing officers to prove that a perpetrator has been in contact with a victim.

Detective Inspector Adam Gascoigne, who has led the roll out, said: “The use of SmartWater to protect victims of stalking and domestic abuse has proved very effective so far so we are delighted to now be able to roll it out even further.

“The feedback we have had from those who have received kits has been overwhelmingly positive so we know it makes a real difference.

“I am grateful to the Police and Crime Commissioner for her support and funding with this to allow us to extend the use of SmartWater kits. Like the force is, I know that she is passionate about tackling violence against women and girls so to have her backing as we introduce another measure to protect victims is fantastic.”

All Police officers will be given training and have the ability to issue SmartWater to victims of domestic abuse so that it can be available across the county.

Police and Crime Commissioner Nicolle Ndiweni-Roberts, said: “This technology will strengthen protection for victims of domestic abuse across the county.

“The results from our trials were compelling. SmartWater deters offending, helps secure vital evidence and supports successful investigations. Most importantly, it gives victims greater peace of mind at a time when many are living in fear. Recipients have consistently told us it has helped them feel safer and more secure in their own homes.

“Domestic abuse and stalking can leave deep and lasting scars. Every victim deserves to feel safe, supported and able to rebuild their life with confidence. This investment is another important step in providing the protection, care and reassurance victims need, while sending a clear message that we will do everything possible to hold offenders to account.”
