Ahead of the latest release of Bridgerton to TV screens, the fraud team within Derbyshire Constabulary are highlighting the risks of romance fraud.
The TV community is truly abuzz for the next release of Bridgerton, and whilst fans can’t wait for more episodes of lords and ladies being swept off their feet, concealed identities and dramatic declarations of love, a word of warning from officers states that, whilst these acts are swoon-worthy on screen, they should be considered with caution in real life.
Fraud Protect Officer Tammy Barnes works with victims and to prevent future incidents of fraud. She said: “Shows like Bridgerton are a perfect time to appreciate that what may look like a perfect relationship on screen can be far from ideal in real life.
“In romance fraud, we often see a whirlwind romance being a cover for something darker. These criminals will sweep victims off their feet and promise the world, before asking for money, gifts or taking personal and financial information.
“Whilst a hidden romance, maybe with someone who you’ve only ever spoken to online, might seem like a dream come true, take a moment to look at the reality and where the red flags might be. If they’re asking you to keep the relationship a secret, think about whether this is because talking to friends and family might help you to realise that something is wrong.”
