More than £41m spent on Derbyshire roads since April 2025

A report due to be considered by Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet shows that the highways team have spent more than £41m on maintaining and improving the county’s roads from April 2025 to December 2025, more than in any previous year.

The report, Capital Plan Delivery Update, will be discussed at a cabinet meeting on 19th February.

The record amount of spending for the first 9 months of the financial year on the county’s roads is higher than spent in total for recent years, and there are still three months of the year to go. It is expected that the final figure will be around £52m.

Work includes resurfacing roads and pavements, improving cycle routes, greenways and footpaths and fixing potholes, drainage works and mending retaining walls and landslips.

Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Potholes, Highways and Transport, Councillor Charlotte Hill, said: “I am delighted to be able to report such great progress with delivering the highways capital programme.

“Never before has the team managed to get so much work done in this timescale. It is a fantastic achievement, and credit must go to both our in-house teams, including those behind the scenes who plan the work and those on the front line, and our external contractors who help deliver some of the larger jobs.

“We will carry on making improvements to the county’s roads and pavements, and hope that the weather over the next few months is kind to us.”

The council’s highways capital spend over the past few years:
2021/22: £39.675
2022/23: £35.423
2023/24: £39.741
2024/25: £36.219
2025/26: £41,072 after only 9 months, but expected to be around £52m.

Work carries on at pace during the winter months, but is at a greater risk of disruption due to the weather.
