A local developer has stepped in to help restore a Long Eaton landmark after submitting an application for planning permission.

ALB Group purchased Bridge Mills in Derby Road, Long Eaton in 2021 with a view to transforming the three-storey, former lace factory into residential development.

The developer has now submitted planning documents for the brick-built mill’s conversion into 80, one- and two-bedroom apartments.

If planning is approved, ALB anticipates work to begin immediately with the first apartments ready for occupation within 18 months.

Arran Bailey, managing director at ALB said: “Long Eaton has a long lace-making and manufacturing history, and its buildings are a reminder of that proud past. To be in a position to preserve the buildings that brought employment to the area and will now bring much needed accommodation to the local community, is a great honour.”

ALB has a track record of historic building restoration in the area having previously invested in a project to convert Victoria Mill in Draycott into 73 apartments as well as undertaking the conversion of another mill, Osmaston Works in Derby, transforming it into 65 apartments.

Arran said: “As guardians of Bridge Mill’s wonderful history, it is our intention to retain as many of the original features and as much of the integrity of the building as possible both internally and externally.”

The former lace factory, which was built in 1902 by F Perks & Son for Long Eaton Bridge Mills Co. Ltd. is understood to have been the last multi-story tenement factory to be built in England.

It stands alongside the Erewash Canal with the area to be redeveloped occupying 0.7-acre (about the size of a football pitch) and includes a 110ft-high brick chimney.

Arran said: “There is a desperate need for town centre living space in Long Eaton and we hope to provide quality housing options within this historic building. The space lends itself to living accommodation and the size of apartments that we intend to create alongside the fabulous location of the Mill, will be perfect for first- and second-time buyers, downsizers, lock and leave or those planning to buy to let.”

Arran added: “Our previous conversion of Osmaston Works in Derby and Victoria Mill in Draycott provided a much-needed boost to the local economy. It is our intention that Bridge Mills will be a repeat of this in Long Eaton, as well as providing stylish living space and safeguarding the building for the future.”
