Commemorating International Bomber Command Day

Erewash Borough Council’s Armed Forces Champion paid tribute to service men and women by laying a special wreath on International Bomber Command Day.

Councillor Kate Fennelly presented the wreath made by children from Hallam Fields Junior School at a service in Lincoln on Thursday 23rd July.

This year marks the sixth International Bomber Command Day, honouring the extraordinary achievements and sacrifices of the men and women who served during Bomber Command’s 32 years of operation.

It also marks the 90th anniversary of Bomber Command’s creation in 1936, making it a moment to reflect on its legacy, innovation, and the courage of those who served.

Ahead of the event, Councillor Fennelly, who proudly represented the local community and the Armed Forces Bikers Charity, invited Hallam Fields Junior School to design and decorate a wreath to be laid at the ceremony.

The pupils created a beautiful centrepiece for the wreath, which they presented to her with great pride. Their artwork formed the heart of the tribute taken to Lincoln.

Also attending was John Fuller, the school’s Crossing Patrol Officer, who has been working closely with Kate on essential road safety repairs outside the school. His involvement reflected the strong partnership between the school and the community.

Councillor Fennelly, said: “It was an honour to represent Erewash and the Armed Forces Bikers Charity at International Bomber Command Day. Having served at RAF Cranwell and RAF Swinderby, this commemoration is deeply personal to me, especially with my long-standing connection to the 617 Squadron Dambusters.

“I was incredibly proud to carry a wreath designed by the pupils. Their artwork shows real respect for our armed forces history, and it meant a great deal to take their contribution to Lincoln.

“Bringing our community, our veterans, and our young people together in remembrance is something I value enormously, and I’m grateful to everyone who helped make this tribute possible.”

The Armed Forces Bikers Charity that Kate also represents is a UK based motorcycle charity which aims to assist former members of the armed forces and their dependants.
