Marking the 10-year anniversary of the 2016 UK-EU referendum, East Midlands Chamber has renewed its call for anticipated UK Government ‘reset’ talks with the bloc to prioritise improving trade terms to ease the burden on exporters.

East Midlands Chamber Head of International Trade Lucy Granger said: “Exporters need to be able to trade with EU countries easily, free of any barriers that hinder trade or create a headache, like unnecessary costs or complex requirements to adhere to. While the expected UK-EU summit has been postponed from July and a date yet to be confirmed, following the announcement of the UK Prime Minister stepping down, it’s important that when talks do take place, they improve conditions for exporters.

“Clarity is what exporters need most – what, when, how. What regulations will be in place going forward, when will they come in and how might regulations affect their specific sector or product. It’s this detail that matters, as a business trading with the EU needs to know what to prepare for and when but also know they are not wasting time and resource preparing something that may not be required at all. Any negotiations that take place must bring greater clarity than we currently have and help limit any cost incurred by exporters in making their arrangements.

“In addition to organising necessary documentation, the Chamber’s International Trade department provides useful support for exporters, cutting through any confusing or unclear requirements, so firms know exactly what to do and how – as well as what they don’t need to do – that helps an exporter operate smoothly.”
