National Grid Electricity Distribution has reached more than 91,000 children and young people with electrical safety messages across the East and West Midlands, South West and South Wales over the last year.

As children return to school this September, National Grid is encouraging teachers, parents and community groups to make use of its free educational resources, designed to help young people stay safe around electricity and inspire the skilled workforce of the future.

Andlyn White, Social Impact Manager at National Grid Electricity Distribution, said: “Helping children and young people understand how to stay safe around electricity is one of the most important ways we can support the communities we serve.

“Throughout the year we work with schools, families and community groups across our regions to deliver practical safety education that can make a real difference.

“We’re also helping young people understand the opportunities available in science, technology and engineering, and inspiring the next generation of engineers and technicians who will help power the communities and economy of the future.”

In the last financial year, National Grid teams delivered 6,852 education and STEM engagements in schools, communities and at major events across the Midlands, South West and South Wales, including the Royal Welsh Show, National Eisteddfod, Lincolnshire Show and Royal Bath & West Show.

The programme exceeded its annual commitment to reach 80,000 young people with electrical safety messages, engaging 91,598 children and young people over the last year.

National Grid also supports wider educational initiatives, including its Solar on Schools programme, which helps schools reduce carbon emissions and energy costs while providing opportunities for pupils to learn more about sustainable energy.

Free educational resources are available through National Grid’s Power Discovery Zone. Created by teachers and linked to the curriculum, the resources help bring electrical safety to life through engaging classroom activities while introducing young people to the skills and careers needed to power the communities and economy of the future.
