Residents proud of Erewash’s rich history are being invited to help trumpet it – by getting involved with the borough’s much-loved museum.

The call has gone out from the volunteer group that has been deeply involved with the award-winning local heritage attraction for the past 42 years.  The Friends of Erewash Museum devote time to all aspects of the museum’s operations and have been pivotal to it becoming a treasured institution.

They are determined to see it go from strength to strength – as they play an even bigger role amid the continuing squeeze on Erewash Borough Council’s finances.  Oliver Watts, who chairs the Friends group, said: “We would love more people to join us in helping the museum have an exciting future. It is rewarding work that benefits the whole community.”

The Erewash Museum is in the centre of Ilkeston near the town’s Market Place. Housed in a handsome Grade II-listed building that was once a family home, it has scooped Derbyshire Museum of the Year four times since 2011.  The museum is not only an exhibition space but a community hub for children and adults of all ages, offering cultural and heritage experiences.

Councillor Becca Everett, who is Erewash’s Lead Member for Community Engagement, said: “The Erewash Museum is a beacon for the borough and its success is a testament to the dedication of all those involved – not least the army of volunteers. I would urge all residents keen to put something back into the borough to consider signing up to the Friends group.”
