County Council Cabinet asked (30th July) to approve plans to protect the environment and benefit communities

A new plan has been drawn-up by Derbyshire County Council to help it meet its environmental responsibilities while also bringing about benefits for residents and the local economy.

Cabinet Members will be asked to approve the plan, called the Environmental Sustainability Strategy at a meeting next week (Thursday 30th July 2026).

If the new plan gets the go-ahead, it will help the council to carry out legal duties placed upon it by the Environment Act 2021 and other legislation and will help to improve health and wellbeing, reduce energy costs for households, improve access to green spaces and help communities and businesses to be stronger and more resilient.

The strategy, which covers the period to 2030, focuses on eight themes:

• Caring for Derbyshire’s natural environment and landscapes
• Using energy, fuel and water efficiently
• Supporting clean, secure energy for Derbyshire
• Maintaining and improving air quality
• Reducing waste and using resources wisely
• Preparing for extreme and adverse weather
• Making it easier for people to travel around DerbyshireHelping people connect with the natural environment

Councillor Carol Wood, Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “Derbyshire’s environment is one of our greatest assets and plays a vital role in the health, wellbeing and prosperity of our communities.

“This strategy sets out a practical and proportionate approach to protecting and enhancing our environment while supporting residents, businesses and future generations.

“By working together with our partners and local communities, we can deliver real improvements, underpinning our commitment to help make Derbyshire a great place to live, work and visit.”
