The theft of farm and plant machinery is a serious threat to the livelihoods of many in the farming and rural community. In the past few months, the Derbyshire Rural Crime Team has seen the recovery of a significant amount of suspected stolen plant machinery, over £250,000 worth.
These items include multiple quad bikes, a telehandler and a woodchipper.
Sergeant Chris Wilkinson, from Derbyshire Police said: “It is clear to see the money involved in plant theft, and the costs to the victim and to all of us in increasing insurance premiums.
“We will continue to be responsive and proactive in tackling plant theft and work with the reports and intelligence that we get from our communities.”
A statement advised those who could be affected to protect themselves against theft by keeping machinery in a secure location and out of sight when it is not in use, ensure that there are secure boundaries around properties, and that machinery and tools are clearly marked.

Sergeant Wilkinson added: “It is also the responsibility of buyers of second-hand machinery and equipment to ensure that what you’re paying for is legitimately acquired.”
“Unfortunately, buyers can be left out of pocket when machinery turns out to be stolen. Before purchasing, verify the buyer is who they say they are and if possible, use a registered and trusted dealer.
“Inspect the item and any relevant documentation, and make sure to register it in your name to protect yourself against future theft.
“Remember, if the price looks too good to be true, it probably is! If you have any concerns please report it to us.”
