At the start of the new school term, Derbyshire County Council is looking to recruit to school governor positions across the county.
With over 400 schools and academies, from nurseries to sixth form colleges, school governors form one of the largest volunteer groups in Derbyshire.
An individual governor has a responsibility to work with the governing board, staff, pupils, and the wider community to make a difference to their school. There are a range of roles including parent, associated and co-opted governors to suit different experience and skills.
The Council is particularly looking to recruit individuals with professional business experience to offer support to schools across the county.
Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Councillor Alex Dale, said: “We’re looking for people with the skills and commitment to support us to improve education across the county.
“Schools are at the heart of our communities and governors play a vital role in ensuring children in Derbyshire have the best start in life.
“There are a range of different vacancies from parent governors to specialist roles so if you’re passionate about making a difference to schools in Derbyshire, we’d love to hear from you.”
A current Derbyshire School Governor, said: “I wanted to find a way to ‘put something back into’ my local community and to contribute to our schools. Being a governor was one way of doing that.
“It can take as much time as you are prepared to commit to it, but it is always varied, challenging and enjoyable. There is a real sense of achievement in making decisions, seeing them to fruition and seeing the impact on young people’s lives."
