The Member of Parliament for the Erewash constituency has welcomed new measures announced by the Government to tackle anti-driver road schemes and overzealous traffic enforcement, helping to reduce journey times for motorists as part of its Long Term Plan for Drivers.

Councils are receiving strengthened guidance on setting 20mph speed limits, reminding them that they should only be used in appropriate areas. They are also being urged to avoid implementing 20mph zones where there is widespread opposition. This was the case in Long Eaton, where Derbyshire County Council consulted on a new 20mph zone in the town.  After efforts from Maggie Throup OBE and widespread opposition from campaigners, the County Council rejected this proposal.

Maggie said: “People across Erewash rely on car journeys every day to get to work, visit the shops, and see friends and family. As roads throughout Erewash come under ever increasing pressure from the sheer volume of traffic, I know how frustrating congestion caused by disruptive road schemes and works can be to drivers.

“I have been a vocal critic of low-speed zones and was delighted that Derbyshire County Council listened to my concerns and recently rejected a proposal to implement a 20mph in Long Eaton. This scheme was overwhelmingly opposed by local residents and was rightly turned down by County Councillors. This common-sense approach needs to be replicated across the country.

“The Government is sticking to the plan to improve journeys for drivers, ensuring local councils engage with the community ahead of any traffic schemes being introduced so that only those with support go ahead. It is only the Conservative Government that is on the side of drivers, meanwhile drivers in Labour-run areas are seeing more disruption.”

Alongside driving schemes, consultations are being launched to tackle overzealous enforcement and prevent local councils from turning drivers into ‘cash cows’ by profiting from traffic restrictions. £50 million has also been announced to upgrade traffic lights across 80 highway authorities, improving journey times and reducing congestion caused by red lights.

These announcements are part of the Government’s 30-point Plan for Drivers, which is already making progress to benefit motorists.
