Derby College Group has welcomed the Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire, Mrs Elizabeth Fothergill CBE to its Broomfield Hall site to plant a tree to commemorate the coronation of King Charles III.
The Lord Lieutenant was accompanied by Theresa Peltier, The High Sheriff of Derbyshire and Andrew Cochrane, Under Sheriff of Derbyshire and the Chair of Governors for DCG. Mrs Fothergill planted a magnolia tree, Magnolia x loebneri ‘Leonard Messel’ near to the main entrance to Broomfield Hall.
The delegation met with Broomfield Hall’s Head Gardener Samantha Harvey, along with staff, apprentices and volunteers who help maintain grounds at the college. These included Sara Bishop, who has previously studied at Broomfield and now is a hard working volunteer, and Luke Morley, Garden Apprentice on the Level 3 Horticultural apprenticeship course. Mrs Fothergill also had a conversation with Jon Collins, Head of Land-based at Derby College, and amongst other things, how Broomfield is making great strides in improving their sustainability even further
Mrs Fothergill commented “It is such a privilege to commemorate the coronation of the King with the planting of a tree on behalf of Derby College Group. I am always inspired when I visit Broomfield, as the team of staff and volunteers are so dedicated and enthusiastic about their work, and make a significant impact on the students’ lives.”
Jon Collins, Head of Land-based at Derby College Group, said: “We are very proud to be commemorating the King’s coronation in this way. It is important to us that we commemorate significant national events, and what better way than to do this than by planting such a beautiful tree that will continue to bloom and bring pleasure for generations of students to come.”
