The Friends of Bennerley Viaduct have expressed delight after an application for the eastern ramp, car park and visitor centre at the Grade-II* listed Bennerley Viaduct went live on the Broxtowe Borough Council website.

A project described by officials as 'vital' aims to create an accessible ramp for pedestrians and cyclists, enhancing accessibility and community enjoyment of the iconic heritage site.

The team has been investing a significant amount of effort into this design, believing it will significantly benefit the local area. However, they have issued an appeal to the public, stating that they can't achieve their aims alone and need support to make the project a resounding success.

Expressions of support from the public will significantly influence the success of our application. A statement said: "We firmly believe that by working together, we can make a substantial difference, ensuring that this development becomes a valuable asset to our community."

About the application:  The application site is currently grassland, with an existing surfaced path connecting a pedestrian route across the viaduct with A6096, Shilo Way. The proposed embankment, created using nearby earth, will provide a three-meter-wide pedestrian and cycle route leading to the deck of Bennerley Viaduct.

The envisioned visitor centre will feature a design reminiscent of connected train carriages, accentuated by a glass connection. The plan is to finish the centre with corten steel, reflecting the viaduct's use of metal, a harmonious link to its heritage. The visitor centre will offer an education space for local schools, an exhibition space, a café, and toilet facilities.

The surrounding area will feature long-liner paving and outdoor seating, creating a welcoming space for families and visitors. The development will also provide 22 car parking spaces, including three for disabled visitors, along with a bike store.

Chair, John Scruton said: “We at the Friends of Bennerley Viaduct are very grateful to our key partners enabling this project to happen, which includes the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, Broxtowe Borough Council, Harworth Estates Ltd and Railway Paths Ltd. Without their support this project would not happen. But we are also very grateful for the wonderful support of members and volunteers, including our Trustees, without whom none of this exciting development would be happening. We look forward to working with key partners, contractors and designers to see this project successfully completed next year. Do come and join us.”
