A second tree gifted to Derbyshire County Council by the Queen’s Green Canopy scheme has been planted at Elvaston Castle Country Park.

The cherry tree is one of two given to the county council recently by the Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC), a national tree-planting initiative launched by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee last year. The first tree the council was given is a hazel and it was planted at their headquarters, County Hall in Matlock, in early March.

District and borough councils and Derby City Council are also receiving trees from the QGC to plant on sites in their areas.

Derbyshire has already received six trees from the QGC, secured for the county by the Derbyshire Lieutenancy. Those six trees formed part of the iconic Tree of Trees that stood outside Buckingham Palace at the height of the Jubilee celebrations and were planted at a ceremony last October at the council-run Shipley Country Park.

Councillor Tony King, Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Clean Growth and Regeneration, who helped to plant the cherry tree said: “The planting of trees across the country as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy project is a wonderful legacy to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. We’re very proud to be involved and look forward to seeing all the donated trees thrive across our county.

"Trees are vitally important for biodiversity and play a part in our journey to becoming a net zero county. Part of this journey is our Million Trees project which encourages and supports a target of the planting of one million trees across Derbyshire by 2030.”

More than 14,000 trees have been planted on our land since October and around 20,000 more will be planted during the current planting season.
