Erewash MP Maggie Throup has praised the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s Budget as part of a parliamentary debate. The Chancellor delivered a budget focusing on the Prime Minister’s priorities of halving inflation, growing the economy and reducing debt.
Ms Throup said: “I very much welcome the measures announced in the Chancellor’s Budget. The feedback that I have received from constituents across Erewash has been very positive with descriptions such as measured, considered, logical. The Budget shows that the Conservatives, as ever, are the party of economic growth and opportunities.
“I especially welcome the £60 million of new support for public swimming pools. I trust that this will be distributed fairly to ensure that swimming pools like those at West Park Leisure Centre in Long Eaton and Victoria Leisure Centre in Ilkeston can continue to be used by my constituents to support both their physical and mental health.”
On Monday 20th March 2023, the Budget debate continued, with a particular focus on Science and Technology.
The Chancellor announced that the Government is providing £10 million of funding in 2023-24 to 2024-25 to the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), allowing the regulator to maximise Brexit freedoms and accelerate patient access to treatments.
In her speech in the House of Commons, Maggie supported the decision to award this extra funding to the MHRA, saying: “I was particularly pleased to see that the MHRA will receive £10 million in funding. The MHRA is a world-leading regulator, and the extra funding will help with their ongoing innovation work and accelerate the development of ground-breaking recognition routes. This will undoubtedly give UK patients faster access to the most cutting-edge medical products in the world.
“It is also great news that the Government will create and deliver 12 new investment zones across England. I am pleased that the East Midlands has been chosen as a hub. This will help drive business investment and levelling up, as well as bringing well paid jobs to the region.
“The UK is on track to become a world-leading science superpower and I welcome the measures within the Budget that will help us achieve this vision.”
